My daughter Loryn and I just returned yesterday from a week in Knoxville, TN at the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference. If you have never been to a conference you certainly should consider it. Four days of sessions all about genealogy! A conference is one of the best ways to further your genealogy education and have a great time with great people all at once.
We also took the opportunity to do some research side trips to a town where an ancestor was born and and visited (and photographed) a cemetery in the pouring rain. Genealogists don't let much keep them from 'getting their guy' do they?
A visit to the East Tennessee Historical Society's fabulous library proved to Loryn that you absolutely can't find everything you need on the Internet. She was able to find marriage records for her 2 great and 3 great Tolbert grandparents, a huge help to her research but an emotionally moving experience too. I even found a marriage I have been looking for for a really long time.
Back at the conference we attended the Genealogy Guys live podcast and a session about organizing your digital files and then another great one about genealogy blogs during which Loryn created her on family research blog using her cell phone.
I'll post later about some of the other sessions we attended especially those on Wednesday -Focus on Societies Day.
